From the depths of my closet...

It was love at first sight. I was a new mum and had been schlepping around in flats for nearly a year...and then I saw them. Deep red leather, sky-high heels...sex in the shape of a shoe.

I picked them up, caressing their curves...then sighed deeply and returned them to the shelf. I was on maternity leave and couldn't justify spending $150 on a pair of shoes I might wear once a season (no matter how much I loved them.) I left the store, determined to put them out of my mind...but like a spurned lover, they never truly left me.

A couple of months later, I returned and they were still there...but this time they were $70...and in my size! It was as if they had been waiting for my return. This time I wasn't strong enough to reject their advances, and I handed over my cash before I could have second thoughts.

Nearly three years later and they still look as good as new. There's a reason for that. See that dust on the shoe box?

I reckon I've worn them once a year since buying them but, you know what? I don't regret it in the slightest. Those three times I've felt sexy and confident and a world away from being 'mum'...and that makes them worth all the money in the world.

What's YOUR most impractical (yet most adored) item of clothing or accessory?

Those shoes are HOT!! I would just wear them to the shops, I love them that much.

My favourite would be my D&G evening bag. It measures about 20cm x 12cm and is completely impractical for anything other than ID, lipgloss, compact and ATM card. It's black leather with a silver D-shackle on it. Not only is it gorgeous but it has a fabulous story to go along with the purchase.

A wonderful day in Venice, from another lifetime. (sigh)

I have an acid yellow pleated taffeta Marni skirt, bought on sale and worn twice in 3 years. It's divine, and sometimes I pull it out of its bag just to touch it. I call it Alice In Wonderland because of the full-skirted shape, and it is the best "too-much" money I have ever spent.

Plus, I have a daughter now, and all my fabulous clothes and shoes will go to her....right?

Due to my husband being almost the same height as me it took me years to return to my stilletto wearing days. I found a gorgeous pair of black heels, with a smidge of gold and silver on the toes (just to match any jewellery options). They were a litte big for me, but I thought I could pad them out with those heelpads.

No such luck. I have never been able to wear these shoes. They sit in my wardrobe mocking me every time I want to go out.

When I fell pregnant I was so happy that my feet were going to swell so I could actually wear them - even if I had to waddle while doing so. No such luck. The one pregnancy symptom I didn't get? swollen feet.

oooo I want me some of those! Alas my shoe collection is looking rather decrepid and bare. My one possession I cant get rid of, a bright royal blue chong-sam (Asian style high colour, big split thigh high). Trouble is I've worn it once and now it is way too big for me as I lost a lot of weight since wearing it. I took it to our tailors and they said the silk wouldn't handle the alterations. So I guess I'll just have to keep on eating my chocolate and donuts so I can wear it again.

I was going to say, come on down dear shoes at the mamamia meetup. I want to see them!

I have this impractical foxy mini dress my sister Aneets bought for my 30th birthday recently. The kind of LBD you'd wear to a bar (gee, I'm hanging around bars all the time these days!). I love it and recently wore it for the first time and felt smokin'. TOTALLY wear-me-once-a-year territory.

A pair of black stilettos bought several years ago in a sale at Gucci. They were $100, reduced from $999 - I had to buy them purely because they were sooo cheap (compared to the starting price, that is).
I have worn them twice. They KILL my feet so I can only wear them if I don't have to walk far or stand for long! Now, I have two children so they have not been worn for some time but they still make me smile when I see them in the cupboard!

Ha! My ridiculous, Roisin Murphy-style leather jacket. Silly, but I love it so :-)

I think you need to do a grocery shop in those. There's nothing like ditching the mummy look for something sassy, saucy and sexy - even just for an hour of power - those shoes are HAWT!

I can't even think what my item is, but these shoes are gorgeous, and there's no need to ever justify them.

Just read your incredible story on MM. WOW. Beautifully written too. What a wonderful family you have. x
